Training Outline

Confined spaces like manholes, wet wells, vaults and tanks are part of daily work for water and wastewater operators. They’re also among the most dangerous places on the job. Hazardous atmospheres, engulfment and limited exits mean that a single mistake can be fatal, for the entrant and for anyone who rushes in to help.

This course shows you how to recognize a confined space, assess the risks and prepare for a safe entry. You’ll learn how to operate a portable atmospheric alarm unit, set its alarm points and calibrate it, so you can trust your readings before anyone goes in.

You’ll also learn how to choose and use the right protective equipment: respiratory protection, harnesses, tripods and winches, protective clothing, and head, foot and hand protection. The course ends with safe work procedures and how to respond in an emergency, including the use of rescue and first-aid equipment.
